Understanding GBP strength

Sterling strength includes seven counterpart currencies, giving GBP/USD only one equal-weighted contribution. GBP/AUD and GBP/NZD may show substantial percentage moves, but normalization compares those moves with each cross’s own historical dispersion. The currency score therefore reflects relative unusualness rather than simply selecting the biggest nominal change. Review which pairs support the rank and whether daily and weekly strength agree.

What does currency strength measure?

Currency strength describes how a currency has moved relative to a basket of other currencies during a defined observation window. A dollar can rise against the yen while falling against sterling, so a single pair cannot describe its overall position. This meter combines seven relationships for each of eight major currencies: USD, EUR, GBP, JPY, CHF, CAD, AUD and NZD. The result is a relative comparison within this basket, not a measure of purchasing power, economic health or the absolute value of money.

How the 28 pairs become eight scores

Eight currencies produce 28 unique pair relationships. The calculation starts with completed hourly closes for seven USD pairs from the existing Yahoo Finance source. The other 21 crosses are calculated from synchronized USD legs. For example, EUR/JPY equals EUR/USD multiplied by USD/JPY. Each pair contributes positively to its base currency and negatively to its quote currency. The seven signed contributions are averaged with equal weight. Synthetic crosses are linked mathematically; they are not 28 independent market confirmations. Missing endpoints are not filled with invented prices.

Why normalize by volatility?

A movement of one percent can be unusual for one pair and ordinary for another. We use logarithmic close-to-close returns and divide each return by the historical standard deviation of comparable prior windows. Hourly, four-hour and daily comparisons use matching New York time positions; the day window compares the same elapsed portion of earlier Forex days. Weekly dispersion uses prior weekly windows. The baseline ends before the current window begins, preventing future information from influencing historical results. Standard deviation also allows synthetic crosses to be evaluated without inventing high and low prices. A zero-volatility baseline cannot create an infinite score.

Reading the ranking, chart and heatmap

Displayed strength runs from minus 100 to plus 100, with zero marking the middle of the basket. The fixed transformation preserves ranking without stretching a quiet market to the extremes. These numbers are not percentages or probabilities. Bars show the latest observation; rank arrows compare the previous saved observation of the same window. The line chart shows how that window’s strength changed at successive closed hours. Heatmap columns compare all five windows. A full alignment badge requires the same direction beyond the neutral threshold across every column. Mixed colors are useful evidence that shorter and longer moves disagree.

Forex days, sessions and weekends

The default day begins at 17:00 in America/New_York, with daylight saving changes handled through timezone rules. One-day and one-week windows cover 24 and 120 trading hours, skipping scheduled weekend closure. Tokyo, London and New York labels are regional activity guides, not guarantees of liquidity or executable prices. Public holidays can reduce activity without closing the whole foreign-exchange market. On weekends the meter retains the last available Friday data and shows weekly context. A delayed source is labeled separately from a scheduled closure. Opening gaps remain part of the observed movement.

Using divergence without treating it as a prediction

The largest-divergence list identifies currencies furthest apart on the displayed scale. It helps explain the current basket and locate pairs for further investigation. It does not tell you to buy or sell. A large separation can persist, reverse or reflect an event already priced into the market. The pair matrix reveals normalized inputs, while a currency page explains each of its seven signed contributions. Always consider the selected window and data timestamp. News, interest-rate decisions, bid–ask spreads and transaction costs are outside this indicator. A saved share link preserves the original observation so later readers see the same evidence.

Checking the timestamp and saved evidence

Read the timestamp before comparing this tool with another chart. Different providers can use different closing times, and an hourly observation is not a current bid or ask quote. A shared snapshot records its calculation version and selected window, preserving the ranking, pair inputs and image together. The market can move after that snapshot. Switching to the current view requests the latest complete observation without changing the saved one. Historical baseline samples may be fewer around missing source endpoints; those gaps are not converted into invented returns.

For information and education only. Currency strength uses historical prices, can lag market changes and does not incorporate news, spreads or execution costs. It is not personalized investment advice.

Frequently asked questions

Is the dollar strong today?
Open the USD page and read its rank, strength value and seven pair contributions for the Today window. The answer is relative to the seven other major currencies and the displayed data timestamp.
Does the meter use live tick prices?
No. It uses completed hourly candles and refreshes after source data is available. Unfinished candles are excluded.
Why is a pair’s return different from the score gap?
The return belongs to one pair; the gap compares two basket scores after normalization and display scaling. They are different measurements.
Can I trade solely from this ranking?
The ranking describes historical relative strength. It does not predict returns, include news or execution costs, or provide a buy or sell instruction.
What happens on weekends?
The last available Friday observation remains visible with a market-closed label and daily/weekly context. The source timestamp is always shown.
