How much has your currency lost against the dollar?

Follow currency purchasing value in dollars, then compare three ways of holding the same starting amount.

How to read these numbers

BTC price in a currency
BTC/XXX = BTC/USD × USD/XXX

BTC/USDT spot is used as a USD proxy. Earlier Bitcoin history is not included. maximum since 2017-08-17.

Currency loss
Δ = (FX₀ / FX₁ − 1) × 100%

Nominal comparison. No inflation, interest, fees or taxes. Not an investment recommendation.

Exchange rates

Reference FX rates; provider does not identify every fixing as an official central-bank close. Parallel market rates may differ. Periods crossing unreliable historical fixings are excluded. Weekends and short provider holidays (up to three weekdays) use the last known reference rate; longer outages are not filled.

Nominal values are not purchasing power

The results do not adjust for inflation, banking spreads, commissions, taxes, deposit interest or restrictions on moving money. A dollar amount that is unchanged can still buy fewer goods over time. A Bitcoin outcome can be negative, and a favorable historical interval does not protect a future holder from losses. Fiat currencies also serve everyday purposes such as paying wages, taxes and local expenses, which the calculator does not evaluate. The results should be read as nominal valuation examples rather than a ranking of suitable savings products. Gold is excluded because the existing futures proxy does not represent an unqualified physical-gold holding.

Reference rates and coverage limitations

FX observations come from the already integrated fxapi.app provider. Its documentation does not identify every historical fixing as an official central-bank close, so the page labels them reference rates. Parallel market prices, restrictions and executable bank quotes may differ, particularly in currencies with multiple exchange-rate regimes. Pegged currencies remain in the comparison and have visible labels. A denomination adjustment is applied only when a source still uses old monetary units; already normalized observations are not adjusted again. No missing business observation is silently invented. Shared calculations preserve their data date, and a new calculation is required to compare a later endpoint.

Questions and answers

Why can Bitcoin reach a record outside USD?

Bitcoin has no single price that is identical in every monetary unit. A quoted price in a local currency combines the dollar value of Bitcoin with the number of local currency units required to buy one dollar. These two components can move in opposite directions. Bitcoin can fall in dollars while rising in a currency that weakens more quickly. The map makes that arithmetic visible without implying that a record is a trading signal. A local record describes a historical comparison in that currency; it does not establish future returns or explain every change in the exchange rate.

What does a daily record mean here?

The highest value shown here is the maximum of completed daily Bitcoin prices multiplied by the reference exchange rate recorded for the same calendar date. Intraday peaks are outside this calculation. Bitcoin history begins in August 2017, so these figures are explicitly maxima since that date, rather than claims about the entire life of Bitcoin. The price series is Binance spot BTC/USDT, used as a proxy for dollars. USDT can diverge from USD. Small differences from another exchange, daily fixing or chart are therefore possible, especially near a previous high.

How is currency devaluation calculated?

An exchange rate that rises from ten local units per dollar to twenty does not mean that the local currency lost one hundred percent. One local unit previously bought one tenth of a dollar and now buys one twentieth: a fifty percent loss. The race uses this inverse relationship and starts each selected currency at zero percent. Positive values indicate appreciation against USD; negative values indicate depreciation. The table uses completed one, five and ten calendar-year periods. A custom start date changes the race baseline. Comparisons use the same end date and do not measure domestic consumer prices.

How are equal starting amounts compared?

The calculator starts with the amount entered in the selected local currency. It converts that amount to dollars using the starting reference rate, then compares keeping local cash, keeping those dollars and converting the dollars into Bitcoin. All three results are displayed in dollars at the end date. Dollar cash has no interest in this scenario, while local cash retains its nominal number of units. Bitcoin holdings are valued using the ratio of ending and starting prices. This is a mathematical comparison of historical scenarios, without assumptions about whether a person could execute every conversion at the displayed reference price.
