Close to a death cross 2
SMA50 is less than 2% above SMA200 and still converging. The bar fills as the cross gets closer; the time is an extrapolation of the current pace, not a forecast.
Where the market stands
Every covered asset by the gap between SMA50 and SMA200. Left: SMA50 below SMA200; right: above. The centre line is the cross point.

How to read a Death Cross
A Death Cross occurs when the 50-bar simple moving average moves from above the 200-bar average to at or below it on a completed candle. The shorter average then reflects weaker recent closing prices relative to the long-term average. The term is dramatic, but the calculation is ordinary arithmetic and often arrives after price has already fallen. A Death Cross is a description of the averages, not a command to sell or a guarantee of further losses.
The approaching list tracks narrowing positive spreads. An estimated number of bars is only a projection of recent convergence, not a scheduled market event. A rebound can widen the spread again, and several crossings can happen close together in a sideways market. The “reverse cross followed” label records this whipsaw explicitly. The historical panel counts declines after past Death Cross events for context while also reporting the actual median price return, allowing outcomes that contradict the label to remain visible.
The tracker calculates a simple moving average from the last 50 and the last 200 completed candles. Each candle contributes one closing price, with equal weight. The spread is (SMA50 − SMA200) ÷ SMA200, shown as a signed percentage. It expresses how far the faster average is from the slower one. A small spread alone does not mean a cross is imminent: the averages must also be moving toward each other across recent completed bars.
The daily crypto candle closes at 00:00 UTC. A weekly candle runs from Monday 00:00 UTC to the next Monday 00:00 UTC and enters calculations only after all seven daily candles exist. That rule prevents a moving line from changing within an unfinished period. For a 200-week average the data must cover nearly four years without missing weeks. Assets with shorter or interrupted series are excluded from that timeframe, and the coverage count above makes this limitation visible.
The “Where the market stands” block shows every covered asset by the gap between the averages. A negative value means SMA50 is below SMA200, a positive one above; the dashed line is the cross point. Signs and labels repeat the colour, so the chart reads without colour vision. The ring on a card is the event priority, not an expected return.
Priority combines market size, trading activity on the crossing candle, the rate at which the averages diverge, timeframe and this asset’s observed history. Weekly events receive more weight because they summarize a longer interval. Missing factors reduce confidence and their weights are redistributed; they are never silently treated as a bad result. The score ranks what may deserve a closer look. It is not a probability of profit, and assets with different histories should not be compared as if their data quality were identical.
Performance uses the closing price of the crossing candle as its starting point. A daily event is measured after 7, 30 and 90 further closed daily candles; a weekly event after 1, 4 and 13 further completed weeks. A result remains blank until that horizon is observable. Maximum rise and drawdown use subsequent candle highs and lows within the displayed horizon. A reverse crossing is marked separately, because a market can whipsaw even when its later price return happens to be positive.
Historical figures are descriptive. The tracker shows the number of completed observations beside the fraction that moved in the indicated direction and the median return. A tiny sample is labelled as such. Earlier crosses can occur under very different liquidity, volatility and macroeconomic conditions. The moving averages lag price by design; sudden reversals and sideways markets can create frequent false crosses. No historical fraction or estimated arrival time tells you what the next candle will do.
Questions and limitations
What exactly triggers a cross?
Only a sign change of SMA50 − SMA200 between two consecutive completed candles. An unfinished candle and repeated equality do not produce new events.
Why is an asset absent from 1W?
SMA200 on 1W needs at least 200 complete weekly candles from one valid continuous market series. A missing week resets the calculation window.
Is the ETA a forecast?
No. It extends the recent speed at which the two averages approached each other. That speed can reverse at any time.
How is a whipsaw identified?
A later crossing in the opposite direction marks the earlier event as reversed. We keep both events and their subsequent price outcomes.
Can I compare priority across assets?
You can use it to sort observations, but missing market size, volume or historical data lowers confidence. Priority is not a calibrated probability.
Why are some returns missing?
A 30-bar or 90-bar result only exists after that many additional closed candles have been observed without a data gap.
This tracker describes historical market data. It is not investment advice or a buy or sell recommendation.
